Assessing climate change causes, risks and opportunities in forestry

چکیده
Forests play an important role in regulating the global climate by storing carbon that would otherwise be released as CO2 to the atmosphere, and affecting the global energy balance through absorption of solar radiation. Forests are also affected directly by the impact of increased CO2 levels and temperatures on ecosystem processes, and indirectly by human responses seeking to mitigate the net emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) or adapting to new climates. This paper assesses the significance of these different aspects in the context of poverty reduction. It provides a brief assessment of the global effect of deforestation on net global GHG emissions; assesses the positive and negative direct effects of climate change on forest productivity, forest disturbance, carbon sequestration, water and air quality, biodiversity and cultural services; and discusses the indirect effects on forestry of human responses to minimize net GHG emissions through new markets, other land use change and global, national and local initiatives.

Spatial Indicators for Assessing Climate Risks and Opportunities within the Urban Environment of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
This paper describes the research results in the development of spatial indicators for assessing both climate risks and opportunities for the southern Vietnamese city of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). The assessment is based upon a shared spatial framework, utilising an urban structure type approach. The key urban environmental impact indicator of imperviousness is provided as an example. The propose...

policies: a necessary approach Development efforts will be seriously hampered by the risks of climate change if these are not tackled. Reduced economic growth due to climate change damages, threatened or under-performing investments, lower food production due to maladaptation to climate variability and a changing climate are examples of the influence of climate on development. Unsustainable dev...

متن کاملClimate change and increased risk for the insurance sector: a global perspective and an assessment for the Netherlands
Climate change is projected to increase the frequency and severity of extreme weather events. As a consequence, economic losses caused by natural catastrophes could increase significantly. This will have considerable consequences for the insurance sector. On the one hand, increased risk from weather extremes requires assessing expected changes in damage and including adequate climate change pro...
